The Haji Ali Dargah is a mosque and dargah (tomb) located on an islet off the coast of Worli in the southern part of Mumbai. Near the heart of the city proper, the dargah is one of the most recognisable landmarks of Muslims. n exquisite example of Indo-Islamic Architecture, associated with legends about doomed lovers, the dargah contains the tomb of Sayed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. The Haji Ali Dargah was constructed in 1431 in memory of a wealthy Muslim merchant, Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, who gave up all his worldly possessions before making a pilgrimage to Mecca. Hailing from Bukhara, in present-day Uzbekistan, Bukhari travelled around the world in the early to mid 15th century, and eventually settled in present-day Mumbai.

History

many saints migrated to India from Arabian countries and Persia to spread the word of Islam. They came as and when informed by their own intuition or as per the instruction of Prophet Mohammed. A magnificent example of such spread of Islam by an Iranian saint was that of Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari. In the propagation of Sufism, he travelled all the way to Mumbai leaving all his earthly belongings behind in his home town of Bukhari according to the tradition of Sufi Qalanders. It is a belief of the Muslims that the holy saints who sacrifice and devote their lives in the way of Allah are immortal. Legend has it that once when Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari was sitting at some lonely place in his hometown saying his prayers, a woman passed by from there crying and screaming. When the saint enquired about her crying, she pointed to an empty vessel in her hand and said that she had dropped some oil and if she went home without the oil her husband would beat her. The saint asked her to calm down and accompanied her to the place where the oil had been dropped. He then took the vessel from the wailing woman and pushed the earth with his thumb. Immediately, the oil gushed out like a fountain and the vessel was filled to the brim. The saint gave her the vessel with the oil and the woman went away happily.

  • The Haji Ali Dargah complex sprawls over an area of 5000 sq m and consists of three main structures – a dargah, mosque and sanatorium. Mughal style of architecture has been used in the construction of this shrine, which has imposing white minarets and a large marble-covered entrance. The tomb is a white marble structure with arched frames, exquisite mirror work and a silver crown. A sacred cloth with Quran's verses covers the sacred relics of the saint. The dome above the tomb has mirror work detailing that forms a mosaic of beautiful patterns. There are three halls in the main dargah, of which one is reserved for women. This religious compound has a huge foyer called Qawwal Khana, where qawwali performances take place in the honour of Haji Ali.
